Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Ulgii

    Fly west across the country, settle into a Kazakh guesthouse, evening briefing over beshbarmak.

  2. Day 2

    Meet your eagle hunter

    Ride out to the family's summer camp, meet the eagle, learn how she was taken and trained.

  3. Day 4

    Hunting practice on horseback

    A full day in the hills watching the eagle called down to the lure — and taking a turn on the glove yourself.

  4. Day 6

    Golden Eagle Festival

    Competition day: hunters in fox-fur coats parade, then call their birds from the ridge above the crowd.

  5. Day 9

    Return east

    Morning market for a felt souvenir, afternoon flight to Ulaanbaatar, farewell dinner.
